Handcrafted Sunglasses
FramesLumete frames are handmade with traditional methods and materials that have been used in handcrafted eyewear for close to a century. The material is called zyl acetate, also referred to as ‘cellulose acetate’ or simply ‘acetate’ or ‘zyl’ (short for zylonite). Acetate originates from natural cotton fibers and tree pulp, which give the frames a more natural feel and malleable nature. Derived from renewable resources, acetate is non-petroleum based and hypoallergenic.
Lumete frames are carved out of richly hued blocks of acetate. These blocks of aceate often have multiple layers or embedded patterns. Once carved, the frames are then polished extensively to a beautiful shine. We have searched through endless samples of colors and patterns to find the perfect high quality acetate for each frame. Handmade acetate frames are easily adjustable by your optician. Your optician can adjust the reinforcing core wires in the temples for a custom fit, as well as insert prescription lenses.
We hope to educate customers on the benefits of handmade acetate eyewear. In comparison, mass-produced injection-molded plastic frames are uncomfortable, easily broken and must be spray painted to achive shine or pattern. LensesAll Lumete lenses are made from CR-39 material, which is allyl diglycol carbonate (ADC). This material has superior optical quality, comparable to glass, while remaining lightweight. All our lenses are rated UV 400, for 100% UVA and UVB protection and they meet all relevant American, European and Australian standards.
Unless otherwise indicated, our lenses are Filter Category 3, for strong sunlight. The Filter Category is an indication of the level of visible light that is allowed to travel through the lens. A very light colored lens is likely filter category 0 or 1, medium tint is 2, dark tint is 3 and extremely dark tint is 4 (level 4 are not recommended for driving).
Our lenses have a 6 base curve and are gradient lenses, which means they are darker near the top and gradually get lighter near the bottom of the lens. We believe that gradient lenses are the most flattering for women. Note: The darkness of the tint is unrelated to UV protection (even a clear untinted lens could have 100% UV). So even though our lenses are gradient tinted, the entire lens has 100% UV protection.
All of our frames are Rx-able, meaning your local optician can fit them with prescription lenses.
SizingThe size of our frames is written on the inside of the temples, and it is also available on lumete.com. Simply select the frame of your choice on the Collections page and open the Specs tab. Eyewear sizing is listed in millimeters in the following format: Eye-DBL-Temple
Eye = Lens Width measured at its widest points.
DBL = Distance Between Lenses measured at the closest points.
Temple = Temple Length measured from the center of the hinge to the tip of the temple.
For your convenience, the LW-DBL-TL as well as the overall width and length of the frame’s front are illustrated on a PDF for each frame, which may downloaded for each frame from the respective frame’s Specs tab. Simply select your favorite frame on the Collections tab and select the Specs tab. The PDFs can be printed to see the actual size of the frame. You may wish to cut it out and see approximately how the size will look on your face.
